This was one of our favorites of 2022. When we discovered Studio Underd0g with their fresh, offbeat creations, we immediately contacted them. Unfortunately, all the pieces were sold out and we wanted to get back in touch with the brand’s founder to take the pulse. That’s why, when we announced the release of the 02SERIES FieldWe knew we’d like the result, and we’re sure you will too.
This is one of the few brands to have emerged during the pandemic (let’s not forget the Furlan Marri success story). While the watchmaking world almost came to a standstill, the young English designer Richard Benc decided to take advantage of this opportunity to launch his project with a name clearly alluding to its outsider status. The brand played this card to the full, offering colorful, offbeat chronographs that brought a breath of fresh air to the sector, while at the same time using a derived from the Venus 175 movementthe Chinese Seagull ST190 caliber, also used by Baltic for its Bicompax models.
This new collection brings a new angle on the field watch. A category that inevitably reminds us of the Dirty Dozen, here approached very differently, even if the case displays similarities. The dial is radically different, especially in its construction. In the manner of a sandwich dial, it is constructed in two layers the lower layer is filled with Super-LumiNova (except for the Midnight model), with tailor-made pigments to create a very atypical gradient, while the top layer is made of a sapphire crystal disc on which the Arabic numerals and then the minute scale have been printed. The whole thing is secured by two screws that act as pins, creating a surprising depth with a floating impressiona phenomenon accentuated by the shadow of the index fingers on the background.
Although this collection, named 02SERIES Field, does not feature a small seconds-hand, the 37mm diameter undeniably echoes the Dirty Dozen which, delivered in 1945, measured 36.5mm. With a horn-to-horn length of 46mm and a thickness of 12mmThe watch’s size is perfectly in line with the trend towards “small” watches. The whole is topped by a double-domed sapphire crystal to accentuate its vintage vein, mostly brushed with a solid back engraved with a jellyfish and displaying a water resistance of 10ATM. The surprise comes from its movement, which, after Seagull, comes as a pleasant surprise: a Sellita SW210-1 calibre, i.e. a hand-wound mechanical movement no date. Available from November 1 at a price of €850 (excluding tax), with the first 500 units to be delivered before Christmas.
Available from November 1st on the official Studio Underd0g website.
