G-Shock GWG-B1000: the Mudmaster gets a makeover

For us, the Mudmaster will always be linked to the Smoke jumpers, the American parachute firefighters who dive into the heart of forest fires to stop them. And why? They immediately adopted the first model in the collection, known under the reference GWG-B1000. An icon at G-Shock The G-Shock is back in the spotlight, as rugged as ever, but with a more refined style and all the functions that have made it such a success…with a little bonus!

The Mudmaster collection, as its name suggests, has been designed for resist mudbut also dusta veritable scourge during the toughest field operations. So, while the construction of the case combines carbon fiber with bioresin – the Japanese company’s new favorite material – for the first time, it includesstainless steel on the bezel and casebackThe buttons are protected by cylindrical parts, and a screw lock on the crown prevents unwanted entry. And to take things a step further, G-Shock has incorporatedAlpha (α) Gel to protect the module to resist vibration.

It’s not a toy, it’s a real tool, and its dimensions attest to that: 52.1mm wide by 16.2mm thick. However, its size has been largely revised downwards, given that the original was 56.7mm wide and 18mm thick. But everything else has also evolved: its design inspired by field vehicles and survival equipment is much more modern and upscale, its dial is more refined and offers better legibility – particularly in terms of the functions indicator – and the watch integrates all of the technologies that G-Shock offers.

Let’s take a closer look at functions. The triple sensor remains to offer a digital compass via the second hand, which automatically orients itself towards North and then indicates the angle of your trajectory in the digital sub-dial, as well as your course with the triangular hand at 3 o’clock; a thermometer to your current position (ideally with the watch removed to avoid being influenced by your body heat), then a barometer/altimeter to alert you to sudden changes in pressure, and to measure your altitude. Like the original, the watch is still equipped with a radio control system to keep you on time, and a solar power supply so you never run out of power.

Finally, and this is a first, this GWG-B1000 registers a location from the dedicated application on your smartphone so that its position is displayed on the famous triangular needle at 3 o’clock relative to your position, showing you the permanently stored location. A very useful function for recovering an injured person or finding your camp, especially when visibility is almost zero, day or night, thanks to the dual LED lighting. In short, it’s a tool of choice for adventurersalready available on the brand’s website at a price of 799€.
