A day with the Hamilton Khaki Field Murph 38 and 42mm

This was Hamilton in 2022. Visit Khaki Field “Murph” which became famous thanks to the film Interstellar has established itself as a must-have timepiece from the Swiss-born American brand. To everyone’s surprise, but quite logically, Hamilton has listened to its community rather than the market to unveil a smaller version, downsizing from a 42mm diameter to 38.5mm. A size much more suited to today’s market and European wrists. After a day spent alternating between these two references H70405730 and H70605731Here’s what we think.

Introducing the Khaki Field “Murph

The year is 2067, the Earth is doomedfacing a serious food crisis that threatens all humanity. Joseph Cooper, a former NASA pilot played by Matthew McConaughey, is sent to the far reaches of space with a team of scientists to find a habitable planet. Before setting off, he gives his Hamilton watch to his daughter, Murphy aka “Murph”, played as an adult by Jessica Chastain. His journey takes him through a wormhole, entering a black hole and emerging on the other side, a white hole, but finding himself trapped in a fifth dimensionthe famous Tesseract in the form of a library, from which he will send a message in Morse code through the watchwith a mathematical formula for saving mankind.

Highlights

A faithful reproduction of the watch from the now iconic film, this special version of the Khaki Field respects themilitary heritage of this timepiece with a twist of elegance brought by the polished bezel and alligator-style strap. Its classic design, combined with a predominantly brushed case, makes this passe-partoutwhich is even truer with its 100-meter water resistance which will give you a great deal of freedom, provided you have a second water-resistant strap such as a nylon NATO. In its 38mm version, the “Murph” takes on its full meaning, gaining in both charm and coherence. In both cases, legibility is excellent even if the markings are a little dull. As for the movement, there’s nothing to say, because with 80-hour power reserve under the 1,000-euro mark, Hamilton is doing it right. A little extra, the crown is not screwedThis is rare for a watch with such water-resistance, and makes the whole adjustment/reassembly process much more pleasant.

Our regrets

In its 42mm version, its size seems immensewith an outsized length accentuated by its large dial opening, creating a kind of anachronism with its vintage styling. But it’s also an interesting option for wider wrists. In the 38mm version, on the other hand, the second hand with Morse code meaning “eureka” – which the character cries out as he deciphers the message passed on by his father. disappears. A small, almost imperceptible detail that added a touch of magic that we very much regret. It should also be noted that the strap is rigid, although it will soften over time, which affects wearing comfort. Lately, even if Hamilton had been clear on the subject when the first model was released, we would have loved to see the special box inspired by the tesseract developed with the film’s set designer, but limited to the first 2555 modelsa number referring to the time shift of 7 years for each hour spent in the fifth dimension.

Our opinion on this Hamilton watch

We were big fans of this Khaki Field right from the start, for its history and the little touches that gave the watch such a special meaning. But it was too imposingeven if our small wrists were to blame (17.5cm in the photos). Incidentally, we received the first watch just before the announcement of the second, hence the pause in this article, which should have seen the light of day last November. It’s amazing to see how such a simple and recent watchbut ingeniously taken from a film, is has become as popular. The story is an integral part of the watch. Add to this a near-perfect technical specifications and a “general public” prize of €995, it’s hard not to fall under its spell. This watch, we recommend itthat’s for sure. But as with any timepiece, you have to try it on, and the magic has to happen from the very first seconds for it to earn its place in your collection.
