TikTok Introduces “TikTok for Cars” and Partners With Mercedes-Benz

The widely popular social media app, TikTok, is extending its reach into the automobile industry with its debut in the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class that is set to launch in fall 2023. The vehicle will feature an updated version of the MBUX infotainment system, which serves as a precursor to the automaker’s custom-built operating system, MB.OS. Apart from TikTok, other applications such as Zoom, Angry Birds, Vivaldi, and Webex by Cisco will also be available in the E-Class infotainment system. However, Mercedes’ inclusion of TikTok is noteworthy as it reflects the company’s interest and presence in the Chinese market. Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius acknowledged the relevance of TikTok in Asia and explained that the company selects apps based on market and region usage trends. The decision to include TikTok in the E-Class is also strategic given that the average age of an S-Class owner in China is around or below 40 years old

The updated MBUX system in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class will have a large dashboard display known as the “superscreen,” which will enable drivers to access the TikTok app and watch videos while parked.

Passengers will also have access to a section of the screen situated directly in front of them, allowing them to enjoy the content. However, the driver will be unable to view TikTok videos on the passenger screen due to its limited field of view. To ensure driver safety, a monitoring system will track the driver’s gaze and attention.

Mercedes created a new software architecture to make it easier to integrate third-party apps into the infotainment system. It also has a new app store, which is accessed through the Mercedes me app.

The interior of upcoming E-Class was just one of the announcements and debuts made Wednesday at the automaker’s research and development center in Sunnyvale, California. Mercedes and Google announced a long-term partnership designed to give the German automaker control over its IP and marketplace while offering drivers navigation, maps and YouTube provided by the tech giant.

Mercedes also revealed the details behind its own operating system, called MB.OS (which is expected to debut in its next generation of vehicles in the middle of the decade), and an expanded partnership with lidar company Luminar.
